Wednesday… two pre-teens were at home, to keep them occupied without spending the day in front of a screen: everyone to the mountains!
Christophe Gressin
So here we are, setting off from Toulouse to let them discover the Saint Lary valley while taking advantage of the snow.
Not too early a start, arriving mid-morning with, already, a feast for the eyes as we arrived in front of these mountainous immensities. Unfortunately, there wasn’t much snow waiting for us in the village… access was made easier, and we’re going to go and get it anyway, first thing in the morning: we decide to go and discover the resort.
So we take the gondola and, as expected, the snow is waiting for us!
Let’s say it straight away: if it’s a pleasure to arrive at the foot of the mountains, it’s a treat to gain altitude!
Of course, Pla d’Adet is the starting point for all snow sports activities, and many are busy at the bottom of the resort.
A few runs down the toboggan run and a stroll on the snow fountain whets our appetites!
Yes, the great outdoors digs in! With midday approaching, the slopeside terraces quickly fill up in the glorious sunshine, with the kids eager for a pizza. They weren’t disappointed, and neither was their greedy father!
As the afternoon arrives, we’re going to continue enjoying this setting by going hiking in the mountains. At the guide office, we can agree on an activity and the modalities.
Of course, we could also have “simply” chosen a walk in one of the many guides available, but choosing to go with a mountain leader, apart from the safety guarantee it represents, allows us to discover other places and gives a different approach to the walk (discovery of nature and the mountains through explanations of the fauna, flora and environment in which we evolve).
Daniel has chosen for this beautiful afternoon the rio Barrossa valley, on the Spanish side, in the superb region of Aragon, towards the col de la Munia. We won’t make it all the way to the pass, but we’ll come across some magical scenery. We start the walk under the trees, close to the stream.
We come across a few ruins, in particular those of cable cars that haven’t been in operation for over 60 years! They were used to transport ore for almost 17 kilometers!
The walk comes to an end, and it’s time to head back. We get back down quickly, as the route has allowed us to enjoy the scenery “before” and our destination isn’t that far from the car taking us back to Saint-Lary. We take the road back to Toulouse, with magnificent images in our minds and the feeling of having returned from a holiday….détendus!”
We’ll be repeating the experience for sure!”
