The nature trail in the little village of Ens

An old pastoral path rehabilitated

An invitation to gain a better understanding of an exceptional natural environment. The 1.7-kilometre nature trail, with its gentle gradient, is accessible to a wide public.

The trail,

starting point for hiking and mountain-biking trails

The small village of Ens is located in the Aure valley, 6 kilometers from Saint-Lary Soulan. It is well known for its starting points for hiking and mountain bike trails. For several years now, the association “Les Amis du patrimoine d’Ens” has been organizing various events to promote its history.

As well as offering tours of the village and its church, slide shows, concerts and exhibitions, the members of this association have just rehabilitated an old pastoral path into a nature trail. Follow the trail to discover the natural riches of this exceptional mountain region.

A path to lead herds to pasture

The old pastoral path, known as the “Escalère”, enabled herders to lead their flocks to pasture. After the creation of a forest road, this path fell into partial disuse. Given its scenic quality and the variety of flora and fauna to be found along it, the members of the association “Les Amis du patrimoine d’Ens” decided to restore it.

A better understanding of exceptional nature

The 1.7-kilometre nature trail, with its gentle gradient, is accessible to a wide public. Signposts in the village allow you to get there on foot or by car. At the start, an orientation table with a panoramic view over the Aure valley points out the various peaks you can contemplate. To give you a better understanding of this exceptional natural site, seven information points are scattered along the route. They inform hikers about the natural heritage (fauna, flora, trees, rocks, mountains) that surrounds them.

A moment out of time

Supported by the Conseil départemental des Hautes-Pyrénées, “Les Amis du patrimoine d’Ens” have succeeded in reviving a trail that invites you to experience a moment out of time. Easily accessible in summer and winter (on snowshoes), allow an hour and a half to complete the tour. If you’re lucky, you may come across a herd of village goats or sheep, or watch a lammergeier in flight. Don’t forget to take the time to cool off in the torrent. Finally, enjoy a rare moment of peace and quiet.
