Hiking

around the Néouvielle lakes

“La route des lacs is a must-do when you’re in the Aure valley and Saint-Lary.
This route will take you to the Néouvielle reserve, which offers many walks around emerald green lakes.

By Jean-Michel LORIC

I propose a day hike, accessible to all, even children, that will take you through the Néouvielle nature reserve and take you past 4 magnificent lakes (out of the 5) for your delight.

Lake Orédon

trailhead

Stop your vehicle at the lac d’Orédon (paid parking )
A shuttle bus can take you to the lac d’Aumar in 5 minutes, but you’d be missing out on the most beautiful.
No such thing here, the wild beauty that awaits you can be discovered on foot!
Start the hike from the path that heads off to the left after the parking lot and skirts the lake on its right, heading for Les Laquettes.

You’ll reach les Laquettes after about 45 minutes on a trail that winds its way up through the forest and skirts the torrent several times.

3h
Accessible to children
Panorama of 4 mountain lakes
Enjoy

The serenity and relaxing calm of the laquettes.

You’ll reach the laquettes after about 45 minutes on a trail that winds its way up through the forest and skirts the torrent several times.

Be careful not to leave the path that’s a bit hard to follow at times where you’ll be forced to climb large rocks ( nothing insurmountable) flush with the water!

If your walk is early enough and quiet enough, you’ll surely be able to make some interesting encounters!

After a fairly flat passage along the laquettes, which we’ll leave behind us, let’s resume our climb on the trail that will take us to Lac d’Aubert in about 30 minutes.
Lac d’Aubert, hidden by its dam wall, doesn’t come into view until the very last minute.
But what a delight, isn’t it?

All that’s left is to discover the last and 4th lake: Lac d’Aumar. My favorite, the end of this hike.
Located a little higher than the previous one, it can be reached in about 15 minutes (by trail, not by road), from the shuttle bus terminal parking.

The way back is either by returning by the same route, or by the variant from the last lake (Aumar) in the direction of the Estoudou pass and then a long descent to the Orédon refuge and the parking lot where you left your vehicle.

Finally, if you still have legs and time up there you can also climb:

– to Col d’Aumar from Lac d’Aumar ( at the end of the lake on the left) 1h R/R
– to Hourquette d’Aubert from Lac d’Aubert ( bypassing it on the right, signposted path).1 h 30 A/R
A lovely panorama of these lakes and the surrounding peaks, including the famous Néouvielle, awaits you.

Good hiking, open your eyes and lungs wide.
The mountains, they’re winning you over!
